“What is Abstract Art TODAY?” ’20/21 Juried Artist Audrey Phillips

Artist Statement

My work is inspired by nature, by the emotions and sensations I feel when I’m immersed in its beauty. Through nature’s light, texture, and colors there is a special vibration I feel when I’m in its presence. The vibration becomes a dialogue that is unique to me and the natural world.

This sensing language needs no story, no head space. Instead it is replaced by a language of presence, a calling to quiet the chatter, expand into silence and observe sensations. It is from this place that I paint. I loosen the tight energy that we tend to run on in our daily lives and invite this pure, vibrant energy into my body.

Suspended in this transcendent space, the painting process allows me to tap into my senses and reveal softly focused, yet very familiar realities — stirring up a remembrance of a vision from deep within, one that measures less as cerebral but more sensing and intuitive.
