“What is Abstract Art TODAY?” ’20/21 Juried Artist Dina Heijselaar

Artist Statement

Painting helps me to explore and expressing myself. I have a hard time verbalizing my feelings about the why’s, and what’s of what I paint and am in awe off people that can put paragraphs of words on paper about their feelings and the how and why of their painting or artwork. I just wonder does there always have to be a ‘higher’ purpose in what you paint; can it not just be the fact of creating something that makes you feel happy and gives you a feeling of accomplishment. When I paint I try to make composition and colors pleasing with also the viewer in mind, so they would take a moment to stand still and absorb. Painting abstracts I found to like bold colors, what does that mean? Am I bold, a happy or adjusting person or do I like to explore? Even now during the pandemic and all the political turmoil I find myself adjusting to the situation without a problem, take life as it is and looking forward to the future, explore new paths and learning new things.
