Sketchbook #21: Joanne Carson

“You can learn a lot of things from the flowers
For especially in the month of June
There’s a wealth of happiness and romance
All in the golden afternoon”
the song the flowers sing in Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland*

Carson describes these extremely animated drawings in this way:

“These small-scale drawings were made with a range of color gel pens – fluorescent to black. At the time of their making, I was struggling to transition from sculpture to painting. The drawings gave me a path forward and the means to conjure up an energized ensemble cast of flower characters. The depicted creatures appear to live in an alternate world of gravity, light, and nature – a vision of a world that became foundational to future paintings.”
